Just May is the first queen to sashay away from series four of RuPaul’s Drag Race UK
RuPaul’s Drag Race UK has returned to BBC Three with the debut of twelve new queens who are ready to showcase their fierceness and fabulousity in the hope that they will be crowned as the UK’s Next Drag Race Superstar.
In the premiere episode, Just May, 32 from Essex, became the first queen to sashay away from the competition. She faced Dakota Schiffer as both queens had to lip sync for their lives to Let Them Know by Mabel.
Actress Joanna Lumley joined RuPaul, Michelle Visage and Graham Norton on the judging panel as the first queen was eliminated from the competition.
Joanna Lumley said of Just May’s runway looks: “She hadn’t achieved glamour in her ‘Ru Are Ya’ look. It was sweet but it wasn’t glamourous.”
Upon leaving the competition, RuPaul told Just May: “My dear, I wish every month could be Just May. Now, Sashay Away.”
Just May said: “It feels iconic to be first queen to leave Drag Race UK Series 4 because just like Geri Halliwell, I made an early exit. I’ve learnt what I knew already… I’m a s*** lip syncer! But, now I’m a Ru Girl. The world is my oyster.”
As the first queen to depart the series, Just May left a message on the mirror of the werk room mirror, saying: “It was gonna be May. All my love, May.”
The remaining eleven queens go forward to next week as they continue to battle it out to be crowned the UK’s Next Drag Superstar when RuPaul’s Drag Race UK returns on Thursday 29 September from 9pm exclusively on BBC Three and BBC iPlayer.
Just May comes to YASS to spill the tea with us.
How was your experience on the show?
It was short and sweet but I loved every moment of it. I’ve always been a big fan of the show so to be a part of myself was an incredible experience!
How does it feel to be the first queen to sashay away from the competition?
It was a shame to go home first but everyone remembers the first eliminated queen!
Were there any particular highlights?
I loved the photoshoot on the taxi dressed up as Ginger Spice! Being on set with RuPaul directing me and getting to live my fashion fantasy was definitely a memorable moment.
What advice would you give to any budding drag queens watching the series?
Pick an obscure pop star from your childhood and emulate everything what they do! I love being able to express my love of The Spice Girls through my art of drag and I think it’s really important to incorporate something you’re passionate about into what you do, whatever that may be. I hope I made Geri proud!
