HisPanic are delighted to announce the return of Alejandro Postigo’s Copla: A Spanish Cabaret.
Practically unknown internationally, Copla is the dramatic, heartfelt music that defined Spain’s early musicals and resonates deeply with anyone who loves laughing, crying, and singing along to their favourite diva’s melodramatic refrain.

Once repressed under Franco’s dictatorship, the raw emotion and soaring melodies of Copla have been reimagined for a new intercultural generation. Journey through the upheavals of queer migrant experience: living far from home, translating childhood musical memories, and celebrating foreignness through music.
A celebration of Spain’s vibrant cultural and political history, brought to life with a queer twist.
Alejandro Postigo is a theatre-maker and Associate Professor in Musical Theatre at the London College of Music. His performance work includes musicals like In the Heights (Kings Cross Theatre), Flahooley (Sadler’s Wells), Marty and the Party(Southbank Centre & UK tour) and The Wizard of Oz (Spain Tour); dance works like The Winter’s Tale, Romeo and Juliet and Swan Lake (Royal Opera House) and TV sitcom Episodes(BBC). His creative projects explore queer and intercultural re-interpretations of folklore, as demonstrated in The Copla Musical (2014-22), seen in Europe and America. His latest research addresses the cultural and linguistic barriers found in Anglophone theatre contexts, and champions the artistic contributions of audible minorities, as seen in his latest show Miss Brexit.
