Satyrs & Maenads: the Athens Porn Film Festival is a celebration of art and sexuality held at Romantso. Attracting filmmakers and artists from around the world, Satyrs & Maenads presents over 110 films depicting sex – from the metaphorical to the hardcore – with aesthetics, narratives and performers you can’t see in mainstream porn.

The four-day program – full of films and many events, including The Ranch Hands Party at Alexander Sauna. Cunty Cubs Night hosted by queer party icons Strap-On Unicorns after a screening of the year’s best Queer and Trans films; Philosophy in the Boudoir Night, combining a screening of BDSM films with an all-night party with PJ Mugiwara. Daytime activities include the Erogenous Circles Workshop, the Pornolaiki (makers’ market), which this year will take place throughout the festival on the first floor, interactive discussions about new sex video platforms, and The Porn Academy workshop – a hands-on training in artporn creation for local budding pornographers from German studio Fucking Conflicts, who will immediately present the films produced by the Academy this year.

For the opening film the festival managed to bring the film “The Visitor” by controversial punk director Bruce LaBruce produced by A/POLITICAL. The film premiered last year at the Berlinale and has been screened at many festivals abroad as well as at the Premiere Nights. The screening will be followed by a Bacchic Initiation Ceremony as well as the Balkan Brat Party with DJ Lockbird and a special appearance by draq queen Aphrodite HGW.

As every year, the festival embraces the spirit of hospitality by inviting a foreign film festival to curate a screening of their work in Athens. This year’s guests are Porn Film Festival Amsterdam, who will present their local films as well as talk about the war on sex editing in the city of Amsterdam.

“I’m really excited,” says festival director Menelas Siafakas, a queer filmmaker and activist known for his provocative events and exhibitions, “with the program we’ve put together for this year and the two new parties.”
