River Medway is the Ariel that stole our hearts

Fresh from complete sell out runs at the Edinburgh Fringe and around the UK comes this critically acclaimed smash hit parody musical. Critically acclaimed musical parody Unfortunate: The Untold Story of Ursula the Sea Witch dives into London before the UK Tour – and things are gonna get wet!

The performance has captivated the London audience and we cannot stop talking about it! We had the pleasure to see this musical and to speak with some of the stars of the show that made this performance one of the most memorable shows of this season!

River Medway from RuPaul’s Drag Race UK proved that apart from being a successful drag queen, they are so much more than that. Their acting skills did not go unnoticed in this performance. River is a vivid revelation and Here is what they had to say to YASS.

River Medway, how do you feel being a part of the cast of the critically-acclaimed musical parody Unfortunate: The Untold Story of Ursula the Sea Witch as Ursula?

It’s absolutely a dream come true! We’re only a small cast of 10 and all work together well. There’s a million cogs in this machine and working with this team has been amazing.

How has your participation in Ru Paul’s Drag Race UK helped your career and has your life changed after this?

It’s opened up so many doors and opportunities for me! I’ve been able to travel a lot and work on lots of different shows, concerts, plays and cabaret. I’m excited to now be apart of such a great musical as this.

Talk to me about your experience in participation in this musical.

It’s been a really tough process to be honest. Theatre is no joke! The rehearsal period was challenging but has all been worth it. The audience’s response is incomparable to anything.

What is the most challenging part of the role?

I’ve never done a full scale musical like this professionally before. I haven’t had to work this hard since I was at college! Keeping body in shape and well enough to do 8 shows a week is a challenge but I’ve adjusted well.

How is the role you are playing similar to yourself?

I think i see a lot of my younger self in Ariel. I was desperate to get out of my home town when I was younger just like her

What is your favourite part of the performance?

There’s lots of fun bits in the show. I love all of the songs and enjoy being on the stage with others. The Act One finale might be my favourite though!

What are your future plans?

Hopefully more musical theatre and acting! It’s always been a passion of mine since i was a child and is how I got into drag.

Join everyone’s favourite Disney Diva, Ursula, as she gives her take on what really happened all those years ago under the sea. With an original hot pop soundtrack and trademark filthy humour, it’s time to take the plunge and dive into this year’s hottest night out. Cruella told her side, and Maleficent’s had her moment. Now the legendary queer queen is ready to spill, in this tell-all tale of sex, sorcery and suckers. With a new script and production, the latest version of this hit show is bigger, bolder and sexier than ever before.
